Mustangs take third in First Charter Classic

The Lady Titans of Hopewell had no trouble taking care of South Caldwell Thursday night, winning the championship of the First Charter Holiday Classic by a score of 55-39.
Leading 27-22 at the half, the Lady Titans outscored the Lady Spartans 19-9 in the third period to take a commanding 15-point lead. Hopewell applied intense defensive pressure throughout the entire game, especially in the second half to secure their first First Charter championship.
The Lady Titans were led by tournament most valuable player Meredith Legg. The senior guard scored a game high 24, including 11 in the second quarter alone. Brenica Shephard added 13 points for Hopewell.
In addition to Legg, Courtney Rann and Whitney Renne also were named to the all-tournament team. With the win, the lady Titans improve their record to 12-1, while South Caldwell falls to 8-6.

Boys Championship
The Jaguars of Forestview went on a 10-0 run midway through the third quarter to clinch their third straight First Charter Holiday Classic. Alex Waycaster led the way for the Jaguars with nineteen points, including five of six free throws in the final minute to seal the victory.
Tournament most valuable player Will Farley added seventeen points and Bingo Floyd chipped in sixteen for Forestview(10-2). Farley finished the tournament hitting on 31 of 37 field goal attempts.
The Blue Devils(6-3) were led by Tony Bowers with 24 points.

Alyson Kielar scored sixteen points and Krista Moore added fifteen as the Mustangs salvaged the seventh place game with a 53-39 win over Elkin.

Ashley Waters 21 points led the Trojans to a convincing 69-42 win over the Bulldogs in the fifth place game.

Whitney Rybczyk and Jessica Capers scored 13 points each but it wasn`t enough as the Jaguars fell 56-51 to Mooresville in the third place game.

Matt Oaks 26 points lifted the Trojans to a 72-70 win over the Eagles in the fifth place game. Will Windley`s 21 and Charles Winters` 17 paced the Eagles.

The Mustangs held the Titans to nine points in the second half en route to a 57-41 victory to secure third place in the First Charter Holiday Classic at East Lincoln.
Senior Carlos Marquez poured in 21 points to pave the way for the Mustangs.
