Mustangs upset by the Titans

The East Lincoln Mustangs hung with Hopewell through three quarters Tuesday night, but the quickness and depth of the Titans took over in the final stanza of the Mustangs’ 59-44 loss in the First Charter Holiday Classic at East Lincoln.
The Mustangs (6-3) managed to hold a 13-10 lead after one period, despite making only one field goal in the quarter. East Lincoln dropped in 10 free throws in 10 attempts to provide the three-point lead heading into the second period.
Hopewell, led by senior guard Rod Peay and junior forward Terrance Grigg, went on a 9-0 run early in the second, as the Titans raced to a 17-13 lead. The Mustangs were able to keep pace from there, and went in at the half down 27-20.
Senior forward Carlos Marquez gave East Lincoln a boost in the third quarter. Marquez scored 10 of his game-high 18 points in the period as the Mustangs pulled to within four at 40-36 heading to the fourth.
The final quarter belonged to the Titans, however, as Peay and junior guard Drew Sanchez iced the game away with good ball handling and solid free throw shooting. Hopewell (5-6) outscored the Mustangs 19-8 in the fourth quarter, to send the Titans into today`s semi-final matchup against Mooresville.
Peay led all Hopewell scorers, pouring in 18 points. Griggs chipped in 10 for the Titans.
