No coach is certain how a team is going to respond after a big win. Sometimes a team will sustain that momentum, but sometimes they’ll come out flat. Tuesday, the Lady Rebels did a little of both on their way to a 38-37 victory over the Lady Yellow Jackets.
Once again Candi Taylor was clutch for the Rebels scoring 14 points. Her biggest shot came with the Rebels down 33-30 with just under two minutes remaining.
While Taylor was a big part of the game. She wasn’t the main player on this stage. That right belonged to Katie Thornburg. With under a minute left in the game, and down by one, Thornburg calmly nailed two free-throws to put her team up 38-37.
After turning the ball over on West Lincoln’s next possession, head coach Jaime Boyles was proud of how Thornburg responded. Instead of sulking in her mistake; Thornburg played solid defense coming up with the game-preserving steal.
That effort made Boyles proud.
“She (Katie) worked hard and never gave up on us and helped the team get a victory. It was a team effort,†she said.
Sara Elmore contributed 10 points for West, while Thornburg chipped in with six.
The Lady Rebels are now 3-8 on the season and 1-1 in the Midwest 2A. The two-game winning streak gives Boyles and Co. plenty to be happy about heading into Christmas.
“It was a nice victory going into Christmas break and it will help with morale going into the Christmas Tournament,†Boyles said.
The Lady Rebels will play North Gaston at 6:30 on Tuesday in the first round of the Peoples’ Bank Holiday Clash at North Gaston High School.
