The Gaston College Foundation has been awarded a $141,400 grant by the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust of Winston-Salem.
The funds will be used to buy health science equipment for the proposed Science and Technology Center on the Lincoln Campus of Gaston College.
“Since Gaston College renovated the old Lincolnton High School five years ago and began offering both day and evening classes in Lincoln County, the number of curriculum students has increased from 353 to more than 1,000,†said Patricia Skinner, Gaston College president. “This grant from the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust will enable us to fully equip our labs in the new building so we can expand health science offerings at the Lincoln Campus.â€
The proposed Science and Technology Center will house two science labs with prep rooms and storage space for supplies as well as a science lab/classroom. It will also have three large computer classes, a large classroom to accommodate 50 students, six faculty offices and the necessary restroom and storage facilities.
Construction is expected to begin in the spring of 2005, with a projected completion in the summer of 2006.
“We are extremely grateful to the Kate B. Reynolds Charitable Trust for this generous grant that will help us accommodate student growth and give us the science labs we so desperately need,†said Rosalind Welder, dean of the Lincoln Campus.
The total estimated cost for the Lincoln Campus Science and Technology Center project is just over $1.9 million. The college has already received commitments of $1,794,125 toward the project.
Local businesses, individuals and foundations are helping fund the project.
