Mustangs avenge loss to Wolves

The East Lincoln Mustangs had a simple remedy for the Lincolnton Wolves Friday night. The Mustangs were solid on the defensive end, and played team basketball on the offensive end en route to a 55-40 dismantling of the Wolves at East Lincoln Friday night.
The East Lincoln defense made the Wolves look as young as they are, forcing nearly 20 turnovers for the game. The Mustangs held Lincolnton to only 19 first half points, including an eight point first quarter.
Trailing 3-2 early on, the Mustangs went on an 8-0 run for an 11-3 advantage, and never looked back. The Wolves never really recovered from that spurt, and did not get any closer than three points of the lead in the first half following a technical foul on East Lincoln.
The second half was much the same for the Wolves, as the Mustang defense held Lincolnton without a third quarter field goal. The Wolves managed only five free throws in that period, as the Mustangs stretched an eleven point halftime lead, into an insurmountable 48-24 lead heading into the fourth.
The Mustangs were productive on the offensive end as well. Eight of the nine players that dressed for East Lincoln broke into the scoring column, including 10 points each from Jamelle Lowery and Darin Dellinger. Carlos Marquez chipped in nine points, Alex Newsome eight, Jason Smith seven and Devin Carter six to lead a very balanced Mustang scoring effort.
The stingy defense of the Mustangs, along with many unforced errors by the Wolves, never let the young Lincolnton offense get into any kind of rhythm. Leading scorers’ Zack Gibson and Jammel Jefferies were held to four points and zero points respectively.
P.J. Hamright`s 12 and 10 from Demory Williams led the Wolves.
With the win, the Mustangs improve to 5-1 on the young basketball season, and will open Big South 3A conference play on the road at Ashbrook on Tuesday night. The Wolves fall to 1-4, and will next play Newton-Conover.

Trailing 30-24 heading into the fourth quarter, the Wolves outscored the Mustangs 25-13 in the final stanza to complete the come from behind victory.
Lincolnton went into the locker room at the halftime break with a 20-17 advantage, but the Mustangs came roaring back. East Lincoln outscored the Wolves 13-4 in the third, and seemed to have momentum heading into the fourth. That momentum quickly changed, and the Wolves pulled back in front and held off the Mustangs for the victory.
Solid free throw shooting down the stretch, and good guard play from Cline, Faw and Brittney Jones iced the win for the Wolves.
