The Lincolnton Wolves went into overtime for the second consecutive game Tuesday night. The Wolves overcame 31 turnovers to beat count rival East Lincoln Friday 57-55. Tuesday they were not so fortunate falling to South Point 70-65.
Jammel Jefferies, a transfer from Newton-Conover was once again on his game pacing Lincolnton with 21 points. Zack Gibson added 12 points, while P.J. Hamright scored nine.
Dusty Baskett led all scorers with 27 points for the Red Raiders, while Brandon Young chipped in with 13.
“He shoots it well from the outside and gave us some trouble posting up inside. He scores in a variety of ways,†Wolves’ head coach Bob Cowie said.
Cowie was disappointed by the loss, but was even more disappointed with another 20-plus turnovers.
“It’s disappointing, but I would have been disappointed even if we had won the game. We’re turning the basketball over way too much. We’re turning it over against the press, against the half court, we’re throwing lazy passes. You name it we’re doing it,†he said.
Cowie does not believe that there are no positives for his team, but does feel the excessive turnovers derail much of the Wolves’ chance to win as they’re averaging over 20 turnovers a game.
“We show some positive signs when we take care of the ball. When you turn it
over like we turn it over; you can’t expect to beat anybody—you’re just not going to do it.â€
So what is it going to take to rectify the turnover problem?
“We’re going to have to decide as a team that we’re going to take care of the ball. I don’t have any answers right now. Until we find some, we’re not going to be a very good basketball team,†Cowie said.
Lincolnton falls to 1-2 on the season. They will visit South Point Thursday.

“It was good to get out and play well; especially considering we didn’t shoot the ball very well. We gutted it out with some good defense,†he said.
Cole, Paysour and Friday, some reserve players, will be expected to lead the second unit. Cole scored six points Tuesday.
“We want to continue to progress. Our bench stepped in and gave us a nice contribution. We’ve been working real hard to develop our second unit,†Wright said.
