The West Lincoln Rebels fell 76-70 Friday night to the Cherryville Ironmen.
Although they lost, head coach Chad Wright was pleased with how his team played having been down 22-9 at tend of the first quarter.
“I don’t really believe in moral victories, but we took an awfully big step with the way we played Friday,†he said.
West Lincoln trailed by 16 with five and half minutes left to go. The Rebels cut it to three with a couple of minutes left, but had a couple of turnovers due to Cherryville’s transition defense that derailed any hopes of an upset.
Wright believed the biggest change the Rebels made was between their ears—with their mindset.
“We decided at the end of the first quarter just to attack and not stop attacking. Our kids really responded and did that making a good ballgame out of it.â€
Heath Cole, a reserve for the Rebels, spearheaded the spurt. Cole had an assist, drawn charge and a lay up.
“We seemed like we were a little bit lethargic in the first quarter and he gave us some momentum going into the second,†Wright said.
The Ironmen were led by Brandon Thomas who scored 19 points, Antonio Griggs who had 18 and Brock Alexander who finished with 16.
“Griggs and Thomas really worked well together on the inside-out game. Alexander’s a big strong body that can give you a lot of problems in the low block,†Wright said.
The Rebels leading scorer was Ryan Huffman, while Gene Arp finished with a season-high 14 points as did Josh Fisher. Taylor Woodie and Ben Poole both contributed nine points.
Poole filled the box score; he had seven steals, five assists, five rebounds in only his second start at the point. Arp also had six steals.
Wright was pleased with their defense pressure.
“Ben and Gene did a tremendous job putting pressure on the basketball,†he said.
