WLHS band has successful season

Under the leadership of band director Jack Horner and assistant director David Parsons, the West Lincoln High School “Marching Rebel Band” received many awards during this year’s competitive season.
Entitled “The Water Show,” the band’s 2004 field show featured such tunes as “Anchors Aweigh,” “Sailing,” “Row, Row, Row Your Boat,” “Wave” and the very popular percussion piece, “Galley Cat.” Although young, the band proved to be a hit at every contest they entered this year.
Traveling to Enka, the band received 2nd place in all categories of competition and received an overall rating of excellent for the day. The following weekend in Albemarle the band competed with an overall rating of Superior and received first place trophies for General Effect and Marching. At the Cavalier Classic the “Rebel Band” received second throughout and achieved a first place Drum Major award.
The highlight of the season was in Mooresville at the “Blue Devil Classic” where the band’s performance was acknowledged with 1st place awards in Colorguard, Percussion, General Effect, marching and Music. Receiving recognition for First Place Band in Class A for the day, the band missed placing as Grand Champion in A/AA by only 1/10 of a point.
This recognition earned by the band has given them confidence for next year. Providing much of the leadership and direction for the field show this year were seniors Rachel Dudley and Brandon Ledford.
New leaders have emerged during the season with the seniors’ assistance, and are ready to work with incoming students to continue the pursuit of excellence with this band.
The entire band is confident that next year will see a improvement in size and overall quality of the program.
