East Lincoln now has a Democratic voice.
The East Lincoln Democratic Women’s Group, a committee of the Lincoln County Democratic Women, will start meeting regularly every fourth Tuesday of the month.
The first official meeting will be Jan. 25 at 7 p.m. at St. Peter By-The-Lake Episcopal Church.
“There are a lot of folks who are Democrat on this side of the county,†said Jennifer Harkey, committee chair. “There is no activity for them to go to.â€
The issue of driving to Lincolnton in order to attend the meetings held by the Lincoln County Democratic Women is one of the reasons for having a committee in the east end.
Harkey has attended meetings held in Lincolnton and has seen the poor turn-out from the east end of Lincoln County.
Patsy Black is interested in the committee for the same reason – the problem with distance from Denver to Lincolnton.
She said so far the response from the community has been excellent.
A preliminary meeting was held on Oct. 25 and had a large turnout from the Denver area.
“Fifteen people showed up and 14 people wanted to come, but could not make it, so all together that would have been 29 people,†Harkey said.
The group’s main focus will be on education, membership and recruitment.
This will be the first east Lincoln Democratic women’s group in the area since there was one five years ago.
“The old group had 80 to 150 members, I will be happy if we get half of that,†Harkey said.
Monthly meetings will be held at St. Peter By-The-Lake Episcopal Church on Fairfield Forest Road.
There will also be quarterly meetings with the Lincoln County Democratic Women, which will rotate between Lincolnton and Denver.
The first monthly meeting will concentrate on organizational factors of the committee and how to create awareness in the community.
The membership fee is $25 a year. For more information contact Harkey at email@example.com or call 704-489-1996.
