Starting today the Lincoln County Department of Social Services will be accepting applications for the Low Income Energy Assistance Program (LEAP) this year.
“This is a program that will assist low income families with a one-time check for heating, and they will get this check in February if they are approved based on their income and resources,†said Clara Barnes who works with LEAP.
The deadline for applications will be on Nov. 12 at 5 p.m. Applications will not be accepted on Nov. 11 due to the holiday.
People who have their applications accepted will have a check sent straight to their home.
“It will be sent directly to the client, and they can apply it to whatever heating source they have,†said Barnes.
Everyone who currently receives food stamps will be automatically evaluated for the program.
Those who decide which applications to accept will consider October’s income and what resources the applicant has such as land, stock and bank accounts.
People will be accepted on a first come first serve basis.
“Basically everyone who comes in if they’re eligible with the federal guidelines, they will be sent a check in February,†said Barnes.
