Lady Wolves slip by Ashe County

The Lincolnton Lady Wolves advanced in the second round of the Dual Team State Playoffs Tuesday with a hard-fought 5-3 victory over Ashe Co.
Due to rain, the match was moved to Hibriten. The change in location did not however change the Wolves’ desire to win.
No. 1 seed Shawn Kindley’s match against Katherine Hanes served as foreshadowing earning a 3-6, 6-1 (7-3) win.
Ashe’s Amy Curio beat Jessica Newton 6-1, 7-5 at No. 2. Liz Rhine breezed over Emily Hudler 6-1, 6-2.
Lorna Vega tied up the match 2-2 with a 6-4, 6-0 victory over Angela Graham at No. 4.
Shelley Stevens was pushed to the brink before earning a 7-6 (8-6), 6-3 win over Alex Eller at No. 5 Anna Carpenter gave the Lady Wolves a 4-2 edge heading into doubles’ play beating Laruen Roland 3-6, 6-2, 7-3.
After an 11-9 loss by Kindley/Newton to Hanes/Vega, Graham/Stevens clinched the match with a 10-2 win against Eller/Roland.
Wolves’ head coach Chris Hoffman was happy with his team’s performance against the No. 2 seed from the Mountain Valley Conference.
“Liz made it look easy getting our first win, then clutch performances by Shawn, Shelley and Anna gave us a 4-2 lead,” he said.
“We were confident Ashe could not sweep doubles,” he added.
Hoffman believed his team simply wasn’t ready for their season to end yet.
“Our girls played with a lot of heart. They did not want our season to end today. I’m really proud of the way they pulled together for the victory,” he said.
