Midwest 2A Tennis Tournament begins

In the first round of the Midwest 2A Conference Tennis Tournament at Gardner Webb both Lincolnton and West Lincoln experienced some success.
Lincolnton’s No. 2 seed Liz Rhine advanaced to the semi-finals with a straight set win over Arienne Pearson from Shelby. The win qualifies her for the West Regionals.
Anna Carpenter won her first round match against West Lincoln’s Mara Rudisill. In the next round, she faced No. 1 seed Trish Gaither from Newton-Conover. Carpenter will next play in the consolation bracket for a spot in the regionals.
In doubles’ play, No. 2 seed Shawn Kindley/Jessica Newton lost the opening set then swept the next two to move into the semi-finals.
Their teammates No. 3 seed Angela Graham/Shelley Stevens recorded two wins advancing them into the semi-finals and earning them a trip to the regionals.
West Lincoln’s LeeAnna Young/Nicol Mick won their first round doubles match then lost their second. Abbey Cole/Anna Watson also won their first match but fell victim in the second.
Both doubles’ teams will compete in the consolation bracket. The Midwest 2A Conference Tournament will continue Wednesday and Thursday weathering permitting.
