DENVERâ€” Tommy Gainey of Bishopville, S.C., coasted to a course-record 62 to take the first-round lead Tuesday in the Tarheel Tour`s Cowans Ford Open at Cowans Ford Country Club.
Gainey did not make a bogey and recorded 10 birdies He made five on the front nine and five on the back to break the previous record of 65.
Local golfer Joey Maxon of Denver, N.C., grabbed a share of second place with a bogey-free 65 that included two eagles and three birdies. Joining Maxon at seven-under is Scott Feaster of Columbia, S.C. Feaster had an up-and-down round that included two eagles, six birdies and three bogies.
Laurinburg`s Frank Adams III stands alone in fourth at 66, while Matt Cannon, a six-time winner on tour this year, heads a group of three golfers tied for fifth at 67.
