Lady Wolves assured piece, Mustangs win

The Lincolnton Lady Wolves assured themselves atleast a piece of the Midwest 2A tennis crown beating Bandys 8-1 on Tuesday.
With the win, the Lady Wolves clinched the league’s No. 1 berth in the dual team playoffs.
No. 1 seed Shawn Kindley defeated Veronica Creed 6-0, 6-4. Kimberly Yount beat No. 2 Liz Rhine 6-1, 6-2.
Jessica Newton, Lincolnton’s No. 3 seed defeated Morgan Martin 6-3, 6-0. Angela Graham, at No. 4, beat Cassandra Pope 6-3, 6-1. No. 5 seed Shelley Stevens clinched the match with a 6-1, 7-6, 7-5 victory over Lauren Yoder.
Anna Carpenter won 6-0, 6-2 over Ashley Elliot at No. 6.
In doubles, Kindley/Newton defeated Creed/Yount 8-4. At No. 2, Lineberger/Carpenter beat Pope/Yoder 8-3. Graham/Stevens gave Lincolnton a doubles sweep beating Martin/Elliott 8-1.
In exhibition play, Sheldon McCurry beat Lindsey Gilliam 8-6, Anna Kiser blanked Amber Aultman 8-0 and Kiser/Royster defeated Strong/Rudisill 8-3.
The win ups the Wolves’ record to 10-3 overall with a 5-0 record in the MW 2A.
On Monday, Lincolnton beat West Lincoln 8-1.
Shawn Kindley defeated Leanna Young 6-1, 6-3. Nicol Mick, the Lady Rebels’ No. 2 seed battled Jessica Newton before losing 4-6, 6-2, 7-5.
Liz Rhine defeated Abby Cole 6-2, 6-3. Angela Graham beat Anna Watson 6-1, 6-2.
Shelley Stevens recorded a 6-0, 6-0 victory. No. 6 Anna Carpenter beat Mara Rudisill 6-0, 6-2.
In doubles, Kindley/Newton defeated Young/Mick 8-1. At No. 2 Rhine/Lineberger beat Cole/Watson 8-2. West Lincoln’s Rudisill/Eller defeated Kiser/McCurry 8-6.
Wolves’ head coach Chris Hoffman felt experience was the difference.
“Our experience showed against a young Lady Rebels’ squad.”
In exhibition, Royster/Fortkort defeated Ross/Williams 8-6.

EL volleyball
East Lincoln beat North Gaston 3-2; 26-24, 25-19, 17-25, 15-25 and 15-11.
Standout players were: Krista Abernathy with 33 assists, two kills and eight digs, Brittany Lackey with seven kills, seven aces and eight digs, Sara Singletary with 11 digs and three assists and Lauren Sharpe with 15 kills, eight blocks and four roofs.
The JV team remained in first place beating North Gaston 2-0; 25-6 and 27-25. Outstanding performers were: Kendra Day with 12 assists and three aces and Samantha Betts with eight kills and five aces.
The varsity record for the Lady Mustangs is 5-11 and 5-5 in the Big South 3A Conference. The JV squad is now 9-7 with a 9-1 BS 3A mark.
