Celebrating 100 years of memories at LHS

Memories of long-ago football games, band camps, high school dances and old friends are sacred to most of us and especially Lincoln High School graduates who this year celebrate the school’s 100th birthday. Special observances will be held during tonight’s homecoming activities, which include a parade, an alumni band and representative groups from classes past. The school’s homecoming parade will include appearances by two proud alumni now aged in their 90s —Ruby Sigmon and Harvey Jonas.
It’s an anniversary, but it’s also a nostalgic look back into the past when times were simpler and small town values were shared by just about everybody. LHS graduating classes dating back over 50 years regularly meet for reunions, which are often about lasting friendships developed during those high school years. One of those reunions will be celebrated Saturday as the Class of 1962 honors Keith Turner. Turner and Harry Costner were organizing a fund-raiser for underprivileged children when he died suddenly of a heart attack last year. Keith’s daughter, Monica Markolf, and his sister, Lori White, decided to continue his efforts, utilizing the class reunion as the occasion. The “Krew II Festival,” a cajun party with food, music New Orleans food and an assortment of children’s activities., will be held at the historic Woodside home Saturday beginning at 2 p.m., with parking at the Charter School on Hwy. 182. The cost is $20 for adults and $5 for children, with proceeds going to the YMCA Outreach program for needy youth.
The LHS centennial celebration has been going on for some time, with memorabilia on display at the school. A drop-in earlier this month attracted a lot of attention from past graduates. Kathy Wease, Lincolnton High’s media specialist, has done an excellent job of gathering old yearbooks and memorabilia that help tell the history of a school that has touched so many lives in Lincoln County.
The school, remembered by many as the still very attractive Lincoln Campus of Gaston College, will always have a special place in the hearts of the thousands who attended.
Happy 100th birthday Lincolnton High.
