FSA plans committee elections

Farmers and farm owners in Gaston and Lincoln counties are urged to submit nominating petitions for the local farmer elected FSA county committee election.
Farmers in the Gaston county communities of Riverbend, Gastonia, South Point and Crowder’s Mountain can nominate a candidate to represent them on the five person FSA county committee. Also electing a committee member this year are farmers in the Lincoln county communities of Ironton and Catawba Springs.
Nominating petitions will be accepted through Sept. 3. Nomination forms can be picked up at the local Farm Service Agency office at 1303 Dallas-Cherryville Hwy., Suite B, Dallas.
Nomination petitions will be mailed if requested. Call 704-922-3806 or 704-735-8278. Ballots will be mailed to eligible voters on Nov. 8 and shall be returned no later than Dec. 6.
Each elected committee member will serve a three year term beginning Jan. 1, 2005. The USDA is especially interested in including minority and socially disadvantaged farmers in the election process.
“It is crucial that every eligible producer take part in this election because the county FSA committee is direct link between the farm community and the U.S. Department of Agriculture,” said William E. Davis III, county executive director of the USDA Farm Service. “The election of responsible agricultural producers is important to all farmers.”
The five person farmer elected committee oversees the administration of a large number of diverse programs.
