Lady Mustangs lose volleyball opener to Mooresville

East Lincoln opened their volleyball season against the Mooresville Lady Blue Devils on Monday, losing 3-0, 25-16, 25-3 and 25-14.
The Lady Mustangs head coach feel that the Lady Blue Devils could be their toughest opponent this year.
Mooresville came within two points of the 3A State Championship game in 2003. This year they are arguably the favorite to win it all.
Top players in the loss for the Lady Mustangs were: Krista Abernathy, a sophomore setter, with five aces on 10 of serving, four digs and nine assists.
Lauren Sharpe, a freshman middle blocker, had seven kills on 13 attacks, two blocks, one roof and two digs.
In JV action, Mooresville won 2-0; 25-18 and 30-28.
Top players for the Lady mustangs were: Brittany Lackey who had three kills on nine attacks, three digs and three aces.
Katie Reel had two kills on five attacks and Neely Reid who had six assists and three aces.
Despite the loss, Spanos felt his team did some positive things.
“The girls were a bit nervous facing such a tough team in their first match of the year. They are young and inexperienced. Aside from a few frustrating sequences, the girls are steadily gaining the experience to play at the high level needed to defend the conference championship,” he said.
“We will only get better throughout the season,” he added.
The Lady Mustangs are hoping to three-peat as Big South 3A Champions. Mooresville will arguably be the most difficult team East Lincoln will face this season. by John Mark Brooks
