BANNER ELK, NC – Maiden High School Graduate Katie Clark has signed to play softball at Lees-McRae College. A pitcher and recent recipient of both the Unifour Softball Player of the Year Award and the Gatorade Player of the Year Award, Clark is an exciting addition to the 2005 Bobcats Squad.
Following in Maiden High School Coach Katrina Smith’s (former LMC player) footsteps, Katie has decided that the quaint village town of Banner Elk and unique campus of Lees-McRae College are for her.
Lees-McRae Head Softball Coach Julie Kennedy cannot be more pleased with this decision. “Katie as a pitcher is a much needed addition to our team. Katie as a person will bring a level of maturity as a freshman that is to be highly treasured.â€
No stranger to hard work, Clark talks of workouts implemented by Coach Smith and how much they’ve attributed to her over all physical condition. With the combination of hard work and natural talent, Clark has already accomplished a list of impressive statistics.
As a senior at Maiden High, Clark’s team won their conference tournament for 3rd year in a row. She was selected as an All-Conference player in 1A, while her team made it to 3rd round of state playoffs.
As a junior her team made it to the 2nd round state playoffs and amassed a 16-3 record. She was selected All Conference and Burke Player of the Week for 1A.
As a sophomore she was the first pitcher in Maiden history to throw a no-hitter. Her team went 14-5 for the year, and again made Maiden history with a first round playoff entry, a conference tournament win and a defeat against rival Cherryville for the first time in fast pitch history. She was also selected as an All Conference 1A player.
Her freshmen year was spent at Fred T. Foard High School, where she was selected to the Southern 3A foothills all-conference and voted to receive the Team Before Self Award.
Katie is currently playing in her 5th summer for Denver Dazzle Traveling Team, who placed 3rd in the NC AAU Nationals in 2003.
“I’m very excited that Katie has made Lees-McRae her college choice. I’m very much looking forward to the opportunity to work with her,†says Kennedy.
