A member of the U.S. Olympic Rowing Team who will be competing in Athens, Greece Aug. 13-29 has some Lincolnton connections.
Matthew S. Smith of Woodbridge, Va., is the son of Chris and Celia (Costner) Smith of Lake Ridge, Va. He is the grandson of Carolyn Costner and the late Harry Costner of Lincolnton, and John and Catherine Smith of Denver.
He is a four-time national team member and has competed previously in international competitions in Milan, Munich, Seville and Lucerne. He has already earned numerous awards in both international and national competition.
Smith is also a captain in the U.S. Army and is assigned to the Armyâ€™s World Class Athlete Program. He is Ranger and Airborne qualified, and has attended the Bradley Fighting Vehicle Leadership course.by Staff Reports
