It would be an understatement to call Gastonia’s outburst against Denver Sunday night a big inning.
Playing at Sims Legion Park, Post 23 exploded for 13 runs in a very long third frame to beat Post 455 16-2 in seven innings.
Tyler Leach hit a grand slam and Devin Harris had a three-run shot to fuel Gastonia’s scoring flurry in the monster inning.
Leach, Sammy Asis, Steve Klenovic and Wes McCall all had two hits each for Gastonia (12-4, 13-4). Evan Denton was the winning pitcher.
Will Fox led Denver (1-13, 1-13) with 2-for-2. Brandon Scott took the pitching loss.
Gaston Braves 6, Denver 4
At Lincolnton High School, Denver mounted a late three-run rally that came up short.
Trailing 6-1, Post 455 plated three runs in the ninth inning before the Braves got the game-ending out with the bases loaded.
Naval Academy signee Mitch Harris of South Point struck out 15 Denver batters through seven innings. Harris mixed a lively fastball with a good breaking pitch to keep Post 455 off-balance.
Brooks Drennan, who relieved Harris, gave up the three runs in the ninth before working himself out of the jam.
The top hitters for the Braves were Justin Moore, 2-for-4 with a homer in the seventh, Clay Gibson 2-for-4, and Harris, a solo home run in the fourth.
Denver was led by Colby Burgin (2-for-5), Fox (2-for-4) and Dustin Weaver (2-for-3).
Burgin took the pitching loss.
Denver has home games tonight against Huntersville and Tuesday against Cherryville. Both games will be played at Lincolnton High.
