Race car driver and entrepreneur Doug Herbert will move his operations from Cherryville to Lincolnton, according to a news release from the Lincoln Economic Development Association.
Herbert plans to locate in the former Hugger textile plant, an 80,000 square foot building located at 1443 East Gaston Street Extension.
The operation will initially employ 50 people but officials expect it to grow and eventually have a workforce of 100. Herbert also has plans to open a racing museum.
Doug Herbert Performance Center is a distribution and retail center for automotive performance parts. The companyâ€™s Always on the Edge Sportswear is a screen printing operation.
Herbert said he is looking forward to his move to Lincolnton.
â€œLincolnton will provide us with the opportunity to continue to grow our business. I am very excited about becoming a part of the Lincoln community.â€
Lincoln Economic Development Association (LEDA) made a push for new investments in 2003 with their Community Network Marketing (CNM) program. As a result of CNM, LEDA made it a priority to visit with local bankers to get their assistance for the program.
Danny Richard with Peoples Bank enthusiastically agreed to participate.
Richard was LEDAâ€™s original lead for Herbertâ€™s interest in relocating his businesses.
Richard said he is excited about Herbertâ€™s move, â€œDoug will be an asset to Lincolnton for years to come.â€
Herbert is a seven-time National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) and 20-time International Hot Rod Association (IHRA) winner. He has been a Top Fuel Dragster for 13 years and was the second member of the NHRA 300 Miles Per Hour Club.
LEDA chairman Darrell Gettys said the move is great news for Lincolnton.
â€œI am very excited that a driver of Dougâ€™s caliber has committed to Lincolnton. Lincolnton continues to show its resolve as a pro-business city.â€
Although Doug Herbert Racing did not disclose the exact amount of investment, a company official stated that the investment would be â€œlarge and significant.â€
City and county officials share in Herbertâ€™s excitement. Jeff Emory, Lincolnton city manager stated, â€œThe City of Lincolnton is very excited and welcomes Doug Herbert to the city. This is a first-class operation, and the city looks forward to working with Doug to help ensure his continued success.â€
Lincoln County Manager Stan Kiser added, â€œThe county is excited to see Doug Herbert move into the community and provide jobs for residents.â€
