Woman in coma after severe beating

A woman remains in a coma today after allegedly being severely beaten by her boyfriend Tuesday.
Beverly McCombs, who police said is in her late 30s, was taken to Lincoln Medical Center Tuesday following the incident. She is in intensive care.
Her boyfriend, William “Bubba” Metts, 56, of Lincolnton is charged with assault with a deadly weapon inflicting serious injury with intent to kill, said Detective Matt Painter with the Lincolnton Police Department.
He is being held in county jail under a $50,000 bond.
Neither has a permanent address.
Painter said police received a call from someone who walked in and witnessed the alleged attack at about 5 p.m. Tuesday.
Emergency crews responded to 1308 E. Water St. Extension, a home behind the ABC store on Generals Boulevard.
There they found McCombs unresponsive, with cuts on her legs and neck, Painter said. She appeared to have been strangled, he said.
McCombs and Metts have a long history of domestic violence, Painter said. A number of complaints have been made in the past, but the charges were dropped.
Painter said Metts has denied attacking McCombs.
