James and High are regional runner-ups

For the second consecutive year the Lincolnton Wolves duo of John James and Devin High finished as 2A West Regional Tournament runner-ups.
James/High entered the tournament seeded No. 2 and played up to their billing.
In the first round James/High defeated Adam Lineberry/Grant Vestal from Forbush 6-0, 6-3.
In the quarterfinals they defeated Tate Bolick/Himansu Arora 6-0, 6-2.
Saturday morning, they ran into third-seeded team from Brevard. Zack Henson/Steven Harenberg.
The wolfpack lagged early losing the first set 1-6. But they ‘regained their focus’ according to head coach Chris Hoffman and ‘began to gain momentum.’
The duo won a tiebreak in the second set, then won 6-2 in the deciding set to move on to the finals.
The Brevard team (Henson/Harenburg) was the doubles champ from the Western Highlands Conference.
In the finals James/High faced No. 1 seed Phillip Campaeu and Daniel Isom from Wilkes Central.
Campaeu/Isom were the doubles champs of the Mountain Valley Conference.
The pair of James/High lost the first set 1-6. Although, they ‘played better’ in the second set according to their coach, they lost 2-6.
Despite the loss, James and High’s performance earned them a berth to the 2A State Tournament.
Hoffman couldn’t have been more pleased.
“I’m happy for the kids. They had to face some tough situations in this tournament and they showed a lot of courage and determination,” he said.
Also earning a state berth was West Lincoln’s Josh Sain. Sain, who was a No. 4 seed, only lost to the No. 1 seed and 3 seed in the tournament.by John Mark Brooks
