Motorcyclist flown to CMC

A motorcyclist was airlifted in critical condition to Carolinas Medical Center Tuesday after a wreck in downtown Lincolnton.
Charles Randy Bumgarner, 47, of 12 Circle Drive is in fair condition today, CMC officials said.
The wreck happened at 2:15 p.m. Tuesday at the intersection of East Sycamore Street and North Laurel Street.
According to police reports, Frances Difatta, 60, was driving a Jeep Cherokee south on Laurel Street. She failed to stop at the stop sign at the road’s intersection with Sycamore Street.
At that time, Bumgarner was traveling west on Sycamore Street and was struck by Difatta’s vehicle.
The Jeep overturned, coming to rest on its roof. Difatta refused medical treatment, said John Watts with Lincoln County EMS.
Bumgarner was transported by Lincoln County EMS to Lincoln Medical Center. A helicopter was flown in to airlift him to CMC.
Difatta has been charged with failure to stop at a duly erected stop sign, according to Lincolnton Police Department reports.by Alice Smith
