Too many errors and not enough hits is usually not a winning combination. The Rebels were proof of that Tuesday night as they fell to the Shelby Golden Lions 7-3 at West Lincoln High.
Shelby(3-20, 3-8), scored four unearned runs on four West Lincoln errors and got a solid pitching performance from Chase Price to drop West Lincoln to 13-8, and more importantly, 6-5 in the Midwest 2A conference.
With the Golden Lions leading 1-0 in the sixth inning and the bases loaded, an infield error followed by a single gave Shelby a 4-0 advantage.
The Rebels answered in the bottom half of the inning. Daniel Scronce led off with a double. Dustin Hester then reached when strike three went to the backstop, allowing Scronce to advance to third. Brandon Jones then singled home Scronce and Hester to pull West Lincoln to within two at 4-2.
Shelby added three insurance runs in the top half of the seventh, however, then held off a last inning rally by the Rebels to preserve the 7-3 victory.
Price pitched 5 1/3 strong innings for the Golden Lions before giving way to Bronson Smith who came on in the sixth and recorded the final five outs.
Brandon Jones pitched well for the Rebels. Jones did not allow an earned run through six innings, but was hampered by the West Lincoln defensive errors.
Shelby was led by Jacob Wallace and Bronson Smith with two hits each. The Rebels did not have anyone with more than one hit.by David Keever
