Lincolnton woman celebrates 110 birthday

Maggie Bess Edwards of Lincolnton celebrated her 110th birthday Sunday, March 28 at Buffalo Shoals Community Center.
Special guests included N.C. Secretary of State Elaine Marshall and Janet Pruitt with the N.C. General Assembly. Edwards was congratulated with letters and plaques from President George W. Bush, Governor Mike Easley and Lincolnton Mayor Bobby Huitt.
Maggie Edwards was born March 31, 1894 to Fannie and Thomas Bess. She was reared in Lincolnton with 14 brothers and sisters.
She later married John Edwards and had nine children, seven of whom are now deceased. Her living children are Charles Edwards and Mozell Edwards Coulter, both of Lincolnton.
Coulter and Edwards’ granddaughter, Sharon Gale, help care for the 110-year-old. She has 23 grandchildren, 42 great-grandchildren and 36 great great-grandchildren.
In addition to her family and special guests, Dr. Peeler of Maiden and Jeff Dellinger, family practitioner, attended the celebration.
The party was broadcast on WBTV and CNN.
