Employee work policies revised by school board

Some school district employees holding officer positions in their school’s fund-raising organization will soon have to step down from their positions.
“This was to avoid conflict,” said Tony Jenkins, a member of the Board of Education’s policy committee.
“It wasn’t to keep any parent or teacher from becoming involved in our school system.”
Employees cannot serve in board or governmental positions for organizations at the schools they work for. They can, however, still hold those positions at schools they do not work at.
Board members had heard concerns that school employees who served as officers may favor their own class, grade or subject.
“It could happen, not that it has,” said Jean Dellinger, chairman of the policy committee.
“This was a precautionary effort, really. This had come our way from some of the schools, and we felt it should be addressed.”
The policy covers all board and governmental positions for any fund-raising organization. All booster clubs and parent organizations are included in the policy.
“It would head off any trouble,” said Jenkins.
“I realize that it’s going to cause some problems because we can’t get people involved now.”
The Board of Education also passed a policy at their April meeting that would not allow board members to volunteer in schools if they’re in a supervising position.
Board members are also not allowed to volunteer in positions that involve the direct supervision of a volunteer by an employee of the Board of Education.
Many board members were at first resistant to the new policy, which was encouraged by the school board’s lawyers to prevent liability.
“I think at first some board members felt they could not go in the classroom, but that is not the case at all,” said Dellinger.
Board members can still go on field trips, read to students and visit classrooms to tell them about their work.
They cannot, however, do any jobs that other people may be paid for, such as substitute teach and drive buses.
“I’m still active in schools. I’m going to remain active regardless,” said Jenkins. “I can’t be an effective board member sitting back and taking the word of administration.”
The board also passed policies regarding student health that were recommended by the North Carolina School Board Association. The policies were unanimously passed by the Board of Education. All the policies will stand open for 25 days. by Sarah Grano
