Lincoln County was formed in 1779 from Tryon County From 1784 until the formation of Cleveland in 1841 the county included all of what is now Lincoln, Catawba and Gaston and a large part of what is now Cleveland. The county was named to honor General Benjamin Lincoln, a Revolutionary war hero who was a top commander during the war.
Around 1750, settlers began to flow into the county. The Scotch-Irish took possession of the Catawba Valley in the eastern portion of the county, while Germans settled in the valley of the South Fork.
