The Lincolnton Wolves tennis team fell to the Ashbrook Green Wave 8-1 on Thursday.
Wolves head coach Chris Hoffman quickly pointed out that the match was closer than the score indicates.
“We played Ashbrook better than it (score) says. We battled them throughout singles and doubles— a couple of breaks here and there would have made it very interesting,” he said.
Ashbrooks No. 1 seed Stefan Kulberg defeated John James 6-4, 6-2. No. 2 seed Steven Burgess defeated Devin High 6-1, 5-7, 7-5.
Patrick Nelli, at No. 3, defeated Jason Martin 6-0, 6-1. No. 4 seed Filipe Fidalgo defeated Andrew Mauney 6-3, 6-4.
Green Wave’s No. 5 Robert Sytz defeated Adil Huselja 7-6 (7-2), 6-2. Patrick McConnel completed the singles’ sweep over Brett Jarrett 7-5, 6-0.
The No. 1 team from Lincolnton in doubles competition James/High defeated Kulberg/Burgess 9-7.
Nelli/Fidalgo defeated Martin/Campbell 8-2. Long/Hancock defeated Mauney/Huselja 8-6 to complete the overall match.
“Singles at No. 2, 4 and 5 were very close. No. 3 in doubles also— these could have turned it our way,” Hoffman said.
“We’ll host a very talented Statesville team on Thursday.”
