Sports debate blamed in fatal shooting

Authorities say a fight over sports led to the shooting death of 21-year-old Richard Miles early Sunday morning.

Jason Lee Eastridge, 24, of 5828 Rumfelt Road, Stanley, is accused of shooting Miles just after 2 a.m. in the parking lot of Midtown Sundries, on N.C. 73 in Denver.

LEDA thinking ‘green’

The Lincoln Economic Development Association (LEDA) has formed a committee to establish "green" initiatives in Lincoln County.

The Climate Prosperity Committee, also known as the Green Team, is made up of representatives from economic development, agriculture, housing and government in the county and City of Lincolnton.

Hurricane and blood supply worry Red Cross

The director of the Lincoln County chapter of American Red Cross knows better than to predict the weather, but she encourages everyone to take Hurricane Earl seriously.

“I’ve been on conference calls all day with that,” said Louann Freshour, director, Tuesday. “Right now, it’s just about being prepared.”

Investigator under fire for mishandling notes on two police slayings

A Charlotte-Mecklenburg Police officer is under investigation after he admitted throwing away notes in the investigation of a man accused of killing two police officers, one of whom lived in Lincoln County.

Students start school year right

Lincoln County Schools student enrollment appears to be holding steady.

In 2009, the school year started off with 11,523 children attending. This year, 11,527 are attending.

Denver man killed

A 24-year-old Gaston County man was taken into custody following a fatal shooting at Midtown Sundries early Sunday morning.

Jason Eastridge, of 1629 Mariposa Road, Stanley, is charged with the first-degree murder of Richard Miles, 21, of Denver.

Life Saving boundaries to change

A boundary change to the Lincoln Life Saving Crew Rescue District, will take effect Wednesday.

On Aug. 2, County Commissioners unanimously voted to change Lincoln Life Saving’s service area as a result of a 194 percent increase in calls since 2006.

DSS and Lincoln Personnel help the unemployed

Steve Waters was in a tough situation. He was un-employed with a wife and two children, a 6 week old and 6 year old.

He had been working at a rubber plant in Kings Mountain for six months as a temporary employee. Waters said the company made him believe he was going to land a full-time gig. But then, the bad news came.
